I think a strong argument could be made that any mother that murders her own children is certifiably insane, simply by definition.

Removing a juror for not agreeing with fellow jurors is certainly jury tampering.  That is pretty amazing it would be that lopsided in her favor but maybe the point of contention is whether she's insane or not?

This implies that yes, 11 jurists are going with the insanity defense and one is not agreeing with insanity, which would mean that there's no dispute on her killing her kids, just a dispute on her state of mind.

I read last night that if she was/is declared not guilty by reason of insanity, the maximum she can be held in an asylum in MA is something like 60 days or six months.

Either is possible, I suppose.  It's hard to imagine a full "not  guilty" conclusion when there's no debate whatsoever that she did kill her children.  If insanity is the agreed basis, I'm not sure how "premeditated" would make a difference.

I thought juries had the option of convicting on various degrees of murder, 1st, 2nd or 3rd.  I think they do, at least in some states.  Don't know the technicals though.  They go with the most serious conviction that all agree on?  

The hold out jurist might have considered that by holding out, he risks her going completely free with no retrial.  Jurists are probably instructed not to think in those terms though.
