The Wright brothers flew 3 times on that first day.  The first was just 100 feet or so, but the last was over 800 feet.  The wings had no flaps.  They instead steered by warping the wings, just as birds do.  Not a bad choice of mechanism as the wings were probably difficult to NOT warp, being constructed as the were.  They even built the motor that powered the plane, for crying out loud!  How many bike mechanics today could do that?

I'm hard pressed to respect any criticism of them given the guys were bicycle repairmen.  To go from that to be the first in the air against more education qualified competitors seeking powered flight demands some respect.
