The Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom reported on Monday that Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman’s visit to Tehran was meant to secure a ceasefire with Yemen’s Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthis, as part of a deal that would involve Riyadh transferring $1 billion to the Yemeni group to fulfill a 2023 roadmap for peace that was never implemented.

Under the 2023 deal, the first phase would have involved salary payments to civil workers living in Ansar Allah-controlled Yemen, where most Yemenis live. But US sanctions imposed on Ansar Allah in 2024, specifically the re-designation of the group as “Specially Designated Global Terrorists,” blocked the payments as part of punishment from the Biden administration over Yemeni attacks on Israeli-linked shipping, a response to Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza.

One source speaking to Israel Hayom said Salman brought $1 billion in cash to Iran, but the report didn’t specify whether the money changed hands. A Saudi official didn’t confirm the transfer but said much of the conflict stems from the failure to implement the 2023 agreement.

The two European presidents later touched base with Zelensky in a phone call as well. The Putin conversation was reportedly initiated by the Finnish and Norwegian sides, and not by Moscow.

A veteran Canadian fire investigator is launching an independent examination of attacks on churches and synagogues, as a leading watchdog accuses political leaders of responding to the destruction with indifference.

The Democracy Fund has appointed Glenn Baxter, a certified fire investigator with more than 350 investigations behind him, to examine the fires, assess how authorities determined their causes, and recommend further action.

The investigation comes after years of attacks on religious institutions and the recent destruction of All Saints Orthodox Church in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan.

The 68-year-old church contains priceless artwork and icons.
