Archaeological discovery of mummies in the Taklamakan desert of Western China dating back 4,000 years has captivated the imaginations of researchers, who were surprised to discover that they were caucasians from Europe. The answers to the mystery of who these white mummies were might be found in the later history of Xinjiang province; in the Chinese written records of blue eyed and red bearded merchants such as the Yuezhi and the Sogdians from the West and in the manuscripts written in a mysterious Indo-European language known as Tocharian. Clearly there were both Iranic and Tocharian peoples living in Western China in later times, and the Tarim mummies must have been the ancestors of some if not all of them.

The inhospitable Tarim basin became a vital route for merchants, at the crossroads between East and West, the basin is skirted by oasis towns which were stations for anyone traveling on the Silk Road. The caucasian, Europoid mummies and the ancient Indo-European languages of the region challenge popular misconceptions about the limits of European civilisation in the Bronze Age. The material excavated suggests the area was active for thousands of years, with diverse languages, lifestyles, religions, and cultures present.

A beautiful, respectful presentation -- what I've watched of it so far. You've heard of thistuff but perhaps not seen the tartan, the 'trousers', the comparisons to Scythians etc. When I 1st heard the ethnonym 'Tocharian' it sent a shiver of recognition down me timbers -- and they turn out to be us!

Next ethnic rarity -- 'The last Kalash of the Hindu Kush'

Precious little shows of it here, but these ppl are of strongly caucasian background. Readers Digest did an article on 'em showing it clearly. Nobody knows how it happened but as the narrator sez there are signs of Greekness.

Wonder how far east they got? Did they travel further east than the Tarim Basin or did they turn around and turn west?

"Shiver me timbers". I think that was an old pirate expression, as in the timbers of a ship. ;)

Bosh, your mind's fine!

When I drove solo for IWX, I was in Kentucky in winter. I had a load going up near Cincinnati. It was supposed to be a midnight delivery. The cars started to slide off the road.

When the cars start to go off, it is not much longer before the trucks start to slide off. But I can say I was thru some heavy snow storms during my time there.

I got off at next truck stop, found a parking spot and called Myrna my dispatcher and told her what was up.

She rescheduled the delivery for 10 AM next day. It was the right thing to do. It wasn't hot freight.

I ate breakfast the next morning at the truck stop and I was on my way. ;)

No load is hot enough to die for.

I've seen some bad wrecks on the road and been thru some really bad weather when running the relay out to Kingman, AZ for IWX. And then when hauling produce in from Washington when driving team.

It was snowing so heavily that we stayed on the interstates and went all the way into Missouri to get down to Oklahoma for a delivery at Paul's Valley.

That was only distribution center for Wal Mart in Oklahoma. You could never get in the place and then never get out. :-/

Sheesh, I'll bet you don't miss all that!

It was a hard and lonely life.

One time when driving team we were on flyover ramp coming from Connecticut into New York. My co-driver was behind the wheel. We were empty and going to pick up a load.

He had a skid on he ramp. I said, "That was a tractor skid."

He said, "No it wasn't. It was a trailer skid."

He was wrong and I was right. When we got back to the home terminal I went to see the Safety Director and told him what happened. He put me out driving solo then and there. It was better for me all the way around.

After that I would get order to pick up produce in Washington state. I would get three or four pick ups. The whole trip would take 3 days.

One trip I was rolling west on I-44 west of Springfield. There is hilly area in there. I picked up broadcast on CB radio there was a car rolling east in westbound lanes. He was pretty close.

There was a car right behind me. When he pulled out to pass, that guy going the wrong way popped over the top of next hill.

I'll tell you what, that guy backed off and got behind me real quick. When he finally passed me I tooted the horn at him as if to say, "I knew that guy was coming." LOL

What stories

I am very lucky to recall any of those stories since the meningitis wiped out so much. :-/

BTW, when I drove for Vestal trucking we were going under low clearance viaduct. My co-driver was checking how much room we had.

He said, "You got about four inches."

I told him, "Speak for yourself." ROTLMAO!
