MOSCOW (Sputnik) — There is a “great need” for alternative media globally, as the mainstream news outlets have become “superficial,” US journalist and attorney Eva Golinger told Sputnik on Monday.
“I think there’s a great need [for alternative media] in demand, and there has been for some time,” Golinger said on the sidelines of the the New Era of Journalism: Farewell to Mainstream international media forum in Moscow.
According to the journalist, mainstream media have become “superficial, scandalist, based on just headlines and selling for profit” but still try to control the information agenda while most alternative sources lack professional approach and factual evidence in their stories.
“Having alternative media that can also be organized and professionalized, with journalists and communicators who understand the necessity of not just producing headlines, but also real investigative journalism, stories backed up by evidence, by facts, with different perspectives – that’s even more important today,” Golinger said.
“The alternative media should focus more on the essence of journalism, on getting information to the people, making sure that that information is as balanced as possible and is as true as possible,” Golinger pointed out.
Golinger is a prolific writer, investigative journalist and a host of two shows on RT Spanish broadcaster. According to her website, Golinger uncovered thousands of secret US government agency documents. Some of these documents reportedly detail Washington's financing and support of efforts to overthrow Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
The international media forum New Era of Journalism: Farewell to Mainstream is taking place in Moscow on June 6-7. It is hosted by the Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency and is part of the 75th anniversary of the Soviet Information Bureau. Media experts from over 30 countries of the world take part in the forum.
