The governing body of U.S. college sports Monday announced a series of unprecedented sanctions against Penn State University following an independent investigation into the widespread cover-up of child sexual abuse by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. The NCAA leveled penalties including a fine of $60 million, a reduction of student-athlete scholarships, and a vacating of all wins of the Penn State football team from 1998 to 2011. We’re joined by Dave Zirin, sports columnist for The Nation magazine and host of Edge of Sports Radio. Zirin says the sanctions will punish Penn State students while sparing top officials, including Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett, who has drawn criticism for his handling of the Sandusky investigation while serving as the state’s attorney general and preparing for a gubernatorial run. "We’re attacking 18-year-old scholarship athletes and making them pay the price, when people in power have not really had to be affected or afflicted by the horrible crimes that took place in Happy Valley," Zirin says. "I do not trust the NCAA to be [the] adjudicating body, for the simple reason that their very existence ensures more cover-ups and more scandals in the future." [includes rush transcript]

Also, I have to think that there are more criminal charges coming, ... no?

This cannot possibly be the end of it?!

I should hope, but I have NO HOPE that anyone charged will bring this crime to the proper government levels. That said, the spotlight is sloooooly beginning to turn to the Board, and from there I pray to our esteemed Governor & the 2nd Mile crew (all of whom were ignored by Louie the Free)

I share your lack of hope.

Fuck that, Grab a rock and make your own justice.

WE all might understand that the Leopigs will only watch their own so that means us citizens must pull up the slack they drag and insist upon justice. Hope not necessary, just perseverance.

We run , we live, We fight again, till we win. We did not start this fight. We damn sure did not willingly pay our taxes to buy the bullets and drones that shall be used to kill us. We will correct the violations of this rouge nation....our rouge nation. We will fix this because nobody else can. You will work to help me help us all to fix this failure. BTW, where are all the vigils for those poor boys, most of which are now men, and their families?

The symbolism of the candle marches have come and gone, and not a public statement begins w/o an acknowledgement about the true victims of Sandusky, and my argument isn’t about football per se (anyone with a lick of sense knows those current kids were watching Sesame Street when these crimes occurred), rather it’s about the creation of a new set of crime victims to this cover up. If people can justify innocent people damaged by this as collateral damage it speaks volumes to who they are. The remaining criminals, unmentioned by the Freeh report, were either directly complicit or chose to be silent over the course of a decade and today still remain seated among the powerful and elite. If any group of people should inherently distrust a collaboration between a Governor and Louie Freeh, it should be members of this 4um.

And BTW, what is the solution for those kids?

Every man for himself.

They are few in number.

People should be more interested in the identity of those that knew or participated and are being given a pass.

Concern for the abused young boys is given only lip service.

College football is a BUSINESS, hang all of those involved not just two or three.

Freeh and company will make a big smoke cloud in hanging two or three, justice will be touted as having done its job.

That is unadulterated bullshit.

There is but ONE OBJECTIVE in this charade of law and justice. Sacrifice two or three with public hanging, protect the many who knew of and or participated in this shameful affair.

Paterno CHEATED THE HANGMAN.

Idolatry is stupid, ignorant and shameful in this case.

The untold numbers of little boys were just a throwaway of society anyway, who gives a damn about them.

No statement, regardless of how it’s worded; no car magnet, regardless of its color of slogan, hasn't been either said or thought of. How lovely this world would be if words and gestures could penetrate through the thickness of evil, eh? Again, what this town has been left with since the Sandusky conviction, the death of Paterno, and now the NCAA sanctions, is a town that has been given the “death penalty” and a band of remaining perpetrators who are gleefully celebrating their biggest “victory” thanks to the complete dumbing down of a vast majority of the AmeriKan populace.

Well then it's time to get off our asses and do something, no?

There are currently three law suits in progress, each of which has as it's mandate a *COMPLETE* INVESTIGATION of those who are the remaining principles of these crimes. We are meeting on 9/14, en masse, in front of the Old Main building. I have offered to come and pick you up and drive you to different functions previously. You have refused them all. Once again, if you are as concerned as I am about exposing all of this, I'll gladly pick you up and drive you here. You're more than welcome to stay at my home overnight. The choice is yours.

PS: And don't give me that olde shit. You'll out live us all :)

Spanier...

""For the next several months, as I transition to my post-presidential plans, I will be working on a special project for the US government relating [to] national security," Spanier wrote in an email to the Harrisburg Patriot-News.

"This builds on my prior positions working with federal agencies to foster improved cooperation between our nation's national security agencies and other entities."

This SOB has a top secret clearance to boot.

His bio is thin gruel, paper hanger first class.

"Spanier was born in South Africa and grew up near Chicago[4] in the suburb of Highland Park where he graduated from high school. A family sociologist, demographer, and marriage and family therapist, he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Iowa State University, who honored him with the Distinguished Achievement Citation and an honorary doctorate. Then a Ph.D. in sociology from Northwestern University, where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow".

Did my days in the political trenches long ago.

Well aware of political inertia that exists in most Americans.

Well aware of the olde adage, "let Jethro do it", I am too busy, dont know how, dont want to be involved, too busy, on and on heard it all.

Heard it all way back when you were in diapers Jethro, it is fruitless trying to energize the general populace, it wont work.

Most people have terminal inertia, too damned comfortable. Activism and agitation are rarely used by the masses.

don't the reporters/writers blathering on about how these ramifications are wrong, w/o mentioning any of the worst stuff, including the boys, simply add to that?

What the media doesn't do no longer surprises me, nor does a commissioned $6.5 million dollar report, cobbled together by politicians, for politicians for the purposes of political cover.

there are numerous articles and comments that have been written about the boys. what else can be done for restitution other than give them money. there's no emotional healing just like any other victim of physical or mental abuse or even murder. no amount of money can make up for their loss.

however, i liken the damage to the community like that of the gulf oil disaster. that was a crime too (i know, not sexual) but it is the same scenario in terms of devastation to an entire city.

There is no comparison and the community shares in the blame for allowing this situation to exist.

To date an unknown number of men committed a crime and covered it up. The cover up continues, much to the outrage of the community. Your attempt to blame myself and my family, since we are members of this community, for a crime we weren't aware of is sad.

When it comes to college football, the President of the university along with the V.P. and their top official staff, are fully aware of what goes on concerning pedo cases like this as well as prostitution. I actually knew of university officials at a school who were pimping out students. And the university cops were fully aware of it too. Some of those cops had enough sense to resign while others were given gifts and money to pay mortgages for their homes.

The usual stereotype of a street pusher on the street making money exploiting male and females to turn tricks for johns and janes is jaded thinking these days. A pimp/pedophile can be anybody from a highly respected member of the community to a 19 y.o. member of the established entertainment industry.

I agree, and I'd also add the Board of Trustees to the mix you named. Furthermore, in this matter, it reached into the 2nd Mile, which fed the current Governor more than $640k in campaign contributions. I honestly think the truth will come out, if for no other reason than the incompetent Louie Freeh is the author of the report that is the sole basis of the economic sanctions this town now is under.

My point is that the community at large, not down to individuals, cannot possibly be granted impunity. Again, as a community.

No one can convince me that there are not business people within that community that had they actually known about any of it, knowing that it would hinder their business, and therefore their supply of wealth, that at least some of them would turn their heads the other way. To think otherwise would be naive, you know that.

Every point of argument you floated regarding this, be it that the students wouldn’t be impacted or that the small business wouldn’t suffer was refuted. Now, you’ve arrived at the position that the community deserves this economic punishment. How very despicable considering we know each other over lunch x 2 and me having made a solid effort to get your product into this community SO THAT IT COULD BE SOLD TO THE VERY PEOPLE YOU NOW REVILE.

Ah, sweet irony.

Just as Obama, through his naked Marxism, vowed to fundamentally change America, likewise, you too, via your extreme religiosity, desire to change the behavior of Americans. Sports bars on Saturday and Sunday are bad, however *approved* churches, with approved versions of the Bible are good. Please, spare me your faux morality. What’s left of free, critically thinking Americans would view both views, yours and Obama’s, as rabidly authoritative and brush them aside like a pesky mosquito.

Excessively religious people truly give me the creeps….

What I'm outright suggesting, and really contradicting, is christine's viewpoint that the community, students, athletes, etc. had nothing to do with this. Sure they did unless they were entirely uninvolved in making "Ped State football" as huge as it obviously was.

Get it?

Take that up with christine. I have no idea if she has the patience to re-post her material to you, but I suggest that you ask.

Definitely the Board of Trustees!

I don't trust Louie Freeh at all. Putting him in charge of this investigation is like putting the fox in charge to guard the chickenhouse. His coverup of the Waco massacre in 1993, was more than what I could stomach. I even wrote to him personally letting him know as well as Janet Reno of the DOJ that I could smell the foul reek coming from their offices!
