Chuck Baldwin Defeats Alan Keyes for Constitution Party Nomination Posted by Eric A. Garris at April 26, 2008 10:11 AM

The Constitution Party just overwhelmingly defeated the warmongering neocon Alan Keyes by nominating Chuck Baldwin, 383 to 125.

Last night, CP founder Howard Phillips strongly denounced Keyes as a warmonger, neocon, and egomanic. Phillips was subsequently attacked by Jim Clymer, the CP national chairman.

In spite of Keyes bringing in a lot of delegates, the CP remained true to their anti-interventionist views and rejected Keyes.

"They just rejected the most qualified man to be president," said Tom Hoefling of Lohrville, Iowa, Keyes' national political director. "Chuck Baldwin will have no impact on this election whatsoever."

Good news. I go back to one, Michael New, and Keyes saying he'd jail him for refusing to take orders from a UN military commander. Add that Bill Kristol was his roommate at Harvard and he's NTBT (not to be trusted).

Chuck is a great guy and knows the Constitution.

I'd love to see Baldwin and Charles Carlson on the ballot, although Ron Paul is closer to my own worldview. I also think Paul Craig Roberts would make a wonderful POTUS.

Chuck Baldwin Wins Constitution Party Nomination Posted on 04.26.08 by Austin Cassidy @ 5:28 pm

Pastor Chuck Baldwin, and former 2004 VP candidate, won the Constitution Party’s nomination for Presidential today. He defeated former Ambassador Alan Keyes by a margin of 384 to 126 delegates.

This is not much of a surprise, considering that Howard Phillips, the founder of the Constitution Party, gave a speech to the convention yesterday blasting Keyes as a political opportunist.

Keyes seems like the kind of guy who doesn’t take losing very well. It wouldn’t surprise me if we now see him try and form his own party, run as an independent, or go after another nomination - maybe from the nearly-defunct Reform Party.

No word yet on who the Constitution Party will nominate for Vice-President.

Filed under: Alan Keyes and Campaign 2008 and Third Parties

Keyes won't be supporting the nominee of his new Party, lay a dozen to 1 on it.

He's an opportunist with a bunch of smaller leeches sucking off of he himself...

At this stage anyway. If Ron Paul decides to buck the GOP I'd vote for him, but since that doesn't appear emminant I'll back Baldwin.

Election Year Fantasy #2: Presidential debate between Baldwin, Barr, McCain, and either Obama/Clinton...oh, man.

Right now that's all it is. they found a way around having to debate Pat Buchanan when he was the reform Party nominee. I do however, hope that Pastor Chuck Baldwin gets in any debate. I lothe any of the PTB candidates. Keep your fingers crossed.

Election Year Fantasy #2: Presidential debate between Baldwin, Barr, McCain, and either Obama/Clinton...oh, man.

Love to see it, but I'm guessing he would not be invited. :(

But while keeping to the same mantra — “I have no plan, no intention to do so” — Paul is also not completely slamming the door shut on a third-party run. And, perhaps more worrisome for Republicans should they have a tight race with the eventual Democratic nominee, he’s also not ruling out supporting a third-party candidate.

Asked what he would do if his supporters approached him this fall and asked him whom to support, Paul replied, “I’ll respond when I think I should — when we know where the ducks are lining up.”

“It’s a little bit early for that. Who are the candidates going to be? Not only on top of the two parties, but who will be the bottom four or five?”

As it stands now, Paul said: “If I had to make that decision, I don’t think I’d be very enthusiastic about anybody.”

And anyway, Paul and his much-reduced campaign — it has gone from 150 employees at its peak to about 15 staffers now — have turned their focus from November to September, and namely the Republican National Convention.

“We believe that we’re going to carry about 50 pledged delegates" to the convention in St. Paul, said Paul spokesman Jesse Benton. “A lot of people are technically pledged to other candidates but are going to be there and letting everybody know that they support Ron Paul.”

Two days of handshaking and hobnobbing at his party's national convention have given Fruitport's "Mad Max" Riekse a lesson in political reality.

On Thursday, as he arrived in Kansas City, he said his singular goal was to become the presidential nominee of the Constitution Party.

By Friday, he had moderated his goal, acknowledging that the presidential nod would probably go to nationally-renowned political activist Alan Keyes or national talk radio host Chuck Baldwin.

Riekse said he would settle for the second spot on the ticket.

"You have to be flexible in politics," Riekse, 60, said Friday. "Baldwin and Keyes are going nose to nose. My name will be put up for nomination for president (at the convention), I will make a speech, and that will set me up for vice president."

Riekse -- a former high school teacher, assistant college professor and retired member of the Army National Guard and Army Reserve -- has unsuccessfully sought many offices over the years, including state Senate, state board of education, Muskegon County board of commissioners and Fruitport school board.

His only electoral success came when he won two terms on the Fruitport Township Parks Commission.

Once a Republican, Riekse jumped to the Constitution Party, which was established in 1992 as a remnant of the former U.S. Taxpayers Party.

A mostly conservative group, the party describes itself on its Web site as "completely pro-life, pro-gun, pro-American sovereignty, anti-globalist, anti-free trade, anti-deindustrialization and anti-unchecked immigration."

The party also condemns overseas "military interventionalism," opposing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Riekse has been making a low-key but dedicated run for the party's presidential nomination for months. Most of his campaign has been limited to mailing out brochures under his political pseudonym -- "Mad Max" Riekse -- and tending to his campaign Web site.

He did make one short campaign trip to California, then surprised some observers by gaining more than 10,000 votes in that state's Constitution Party presidential primary. He finished a close third behind two home-state candidates.

This week, Riekse took his campaign on the road again, flying by himself to the party's national convention at the downtown Marriott in Kansas City, Mo.

He spent his first afternoon shaking hands and handing brochures to delegates, and said he received a positive response. He also sought the signatures of three state party chairmen, which is required for a candidate to address the convention.

He had the necessary signatures by afternoon, and had made up his mind about his goal for the weekend.

"Success is my being the nominee of the Constitution Party," Riekse told The Chronicle in a telephone interview. "Nothing short of that."

A quick check with Mary Starrett, spokeswoman for the party, revealed that Riekse's goal was a bit lofty.

"Max is a solid member of the Constitution Party, and we value his contribution to the party," Starrett said. "At this point, we're guessing that delegates are split between Dr. Alan Keyes and Pastor Chuck Baldwin."

By Friday morning, Riekse was inclined to agree with Starrett, and found himself rooting for Baldwin over the better-known Keyes, who left the Republican Party just weeks ago and has been courted by the Constitution Party ever since.

"He just joined the party in the last few days, and he's already making demands," Riekse said. "He wants us to denounce our anti-war policies.

"First of all, I don't think the guy ever served a day in uniform. I will always reject neo-con wars fought for the wealthy elite. It blows my mind that he could make a demand like that."

Riekse said he wanted to get to know Keyes better, so he went to his room at the hotel. After three tries, he said he got a private audience with Keyes and started discussing illegal immigration.

He said Keyes was animated when addressing the issue, but was a very poor listener.

"He's so full of himself," Riekse said of Keyes. "I introduced myself, but I don't think he remembered who I was. It was very disappointing. He never came down to the floor all day. He was holding court in his room.

"I look for Chuck Baldwin to be the nominee. People here don't want to be hijacked by Alan Keyes and the Republicans."

Riekse hoped to begin his vice presidential bid with a speech to the convention Friday afternoon. While he had no prepared text, he said he would remind delegates that they need a common man, with everyday experiences, on the presidential ticket.

Balloting for president and vice president was to take place today.

"I'm going to tell them they need a person on the ticket who can relate to the average person, who understands what it's like to have to work several jobs to make ends meet," Riekse said. "I'm going to tell them they need somebody like me, who's been in the trenches."

Riekse said his ballot name, "Mad Max," will also be a selling point.

"Nobody knows we exist," he said. "We need a handle like 'Mad Max' to get their attention."

Third-party hopeful: I'm vice presidential material

By Friday morning, Riekse was inclined to agree with Starrett, and found himself rooting for Baldwin over the better-known Keyes, who left the Republican Party just weeks ago and has been courted by the Constitution Party ever since.

"He [Alan Keyes] just joined the party in the last few days, and he's already making demands," Riekse said.

I can't beleive Keyes almost snuck into and destroyed the CP...wait, yes I can.

Now, Ron Paul supporters have a REAL choice.

A Constitutionalist that has never voted for the Patriot Act, War Funding, Domestic Terrorism Act, MCA, NDAA...THIS IS A GREAT DAY!

We need to organize NOW and get the CP nominee on as many State ballots as possible.

That would be sweet, but I'm guessing there's some law in place that would disenfranchise Dr Paul from his run at his seat in Congress. I agree with his stance that losing that seat would open up the opportunity for the neocons to use it as a hectoring tool. "Voters reject soveriegnty", all that customary nonsense.

There's no war to win being the lone voice in the House of Representatives, imo...a Baldwin/Paul ticket might be a way of getting around Ron Paul not being able to run for POTUS as a pubbie in some 8 or so States.

A Baldwin/Paul ticket is probably out of the realm of possibility, most likely because Ron is not up for it, but it would certainly garner a heckuva lot of votes imo.

No real Ron Paul-American can support or vote for McHillObama...

I go back to one, Michael New, and Keyes saying he'd jail him for refusing to take orders from a UN military commander.

And when Alan Keyes made that stupid statement he relegated himself to the bottom of the barrel with the rest of the scum for me. Michael New is a hero and the country needs more men like him, not fewer.
